Here’s a look at a simple current usage vs the secular Greek usage in Biblical times:
In the first instance ὑπομένειν is ethically neutral. It simply means “to hold out.” But as ὑπομονή later came to hold a prominent place in the list of Greek virtues, so there predominates in ὑπομένειν the concept of the courageous endurance which manfully defies evil. 1Theological dictionary of the New Testament
But in a Biblical context, the perseverance is against hardships greater than what we generally consider today. In addition to that, the perseverance is done for God and with God’s strength.
